# Spot ink: interfaces printed in two inks
Spot ink is a UI style that behaves like a risograph print. You get two inks and a sheet of paper, and nothing else. Every extra colour comes from printing one ink over the other, tints are dot screens, and the two layers sit slightly out of register until you press something. This is my forecast for where interface taste goes next, built from what designers were writing and shipping through October 2026.
## Why this, why now
No trend report names this style. It's a synthesis, and here is the evidence it's built from:
- **Glass is in retreat.** Nielsen Norman Group's review of iOS 26 ("Liquid Glass Is Cracked, and Usability Suffers") argues that the translucent material hides content instead of serving it. The backlash is about legibility, and blur is what costs it.
- **Calm products are taking chrome away.** Linear's 2026 refresh warmed its greys, dimmed the sidebar, cut separators and shrank icons, with the stated principle "Don't compete for attention you haven't earned." Structure should be felt, not seen.
- **Texture is the anti-AI signal.** Graphic design's big 2026 story is tactile: ink, paper, grain and handmade marks. People read these as made by a person, at a time when generated imagery is smooth and everywhere.
- **Dithering and halftone are back on the web.** Codrops opened 2026 with a real-time ASCII and dithering shader tutorial, and dot-screen effects keep turning up in trend roundups as a deliberate move away from perfect-resolution imagery.
- **Brands are shedding colours.** Commentators on "debranding" report identities cut from eight or ten colours to two or three, often with a single variable typeface.
- **Expressive beats bland, with numbers behind it.** Google's research for Material 3 Expressive (46 studies, more than 18,000 people) found that bold, springy, high-contrast interfaces help people find the key action faster. One published study measured 33% faster fixation and 20% faster task completion.
- **The AI defaults are now easy to spot.** Write-ups on "AI slop" list the same tells: purple gradients, Inter, soft glowing cards, and a second wave of cream and terracotta. One designer calls it "design with no author."
Spot ink answers every point at once. It's flat and legible, so it gives up nothing to glass. Its texture reads as handmade, and its two-ink palette is about as debranded as a palette gets. Its motion is a press, which is quick and springy. And it's hard to fake with defaults, because a press can't print a gradient, a glow or a blur.
## When this applies
- **Fits:** culture and events, editorial, shops with a point of view, creator tools, music, community sites, feeds of things people make, and marketing pages for products with personality. It also suits anything that wants to feel made rather than generated.
- **Doesn't fit:** dense data tools, finance, healthcare and government services, where novelty adds friction. It also doesn't suit products that live in dark mode all day. A "black paper" variant exists (see the recipe), but the style is at its best on paper.
- **A system, not a filter.** Grain over an ordinary layout doesn't make it Spot ink. The rules about inks, overprints and registration are what carry it.
## The philosophy
**1. Two inks and a paper.** Pick two spot inks per product and keep them. The default pair is blue (#0078BF) and fluorescent pink (#FF48B0) on a bright, cool paper (#FAFAF6), with black for reading text. A third ink (yellow) comes in only for status.
**2. Make colour the way a press does.** A new colour is two inks overprinted: `mix-blend-mode: multiply` gives blue × pink = #002284, the primary action colour. A lighter colour is a dot screen of one ink, at fixed steps (10, 25, 45, 70%). Opacity, gradients and extra hues are all off the table.
**3. Registration is feedback.** Interactive things show both inks slightly apart at rest. On hover they drift further out of register, and when pressed or selected they snap into register. Printing the thing is the confirmation, so state changes read without extra colours or icons.
**4. Texture on fills and pictures, never on words.** Grain belongs to the paper, and screens and misregistration belong to shapes, posters and display type. Anything people read is one solid ink: black, or blue when it acts.
**5. Flat, but physical.** There are no shadows and no blur. Depth comes from what is printed over what, and from hard 1.5px rules, used sparingly, in the spirit of Linear's refresh.
**6. One family, set loud.** A single grotesk does everything, from 900 display to 400 body, with tabular figures for numbers only (on punctuation they space it out). Display type is huge and tight, and it's the only text allowed to misregister.
**7. Motion is a press.** It's short and springy, with no float and no fade-ins. Presses stamp down by 1px and the inks spring together in about 120ms on an overshooting curve.
## The recipe
```css
:root {
--paper: #FAFAF6; --ink: #1E1C1B; --ink2: #5F5C57;
--blue: #0078BF; --pink: #FF48B0; --yellow: #FFE800; /* the inks */
--over: #002284; /* blue x pink, overprinted */
--green: #006D00; /* blue x yellow: success */
--flame: #FF4100; /* pink x yellow: errors */
--grain: url("data:image/svg+xml,...feTurbulence..."); /* see the brand guide */
}
body { background: var(--paper) var(--grain); color: var(--ink); }
/* Overprint: real multiply, inside an isolated parent */
.poster { isolation: isolate; }
.poster .shape { mix-blend-mode: multiply; }
/* Screens: tints are dots of one ink */
.screen { background-image: radial-gradient(var(--c, var(--blue)) var(--r, 1.4px), transparent calc(var(--r, 1.4px) + .7px));
background-size: 6px 6px; } /* --r: .9px 10%, 1.4px 25%, 2px 45%, 2.6px 70% */
/* Registration: the two inks peek out on opposite edges */
.reg { box-shadow: calc(-1 * var(--m, 1.5px)) calc(-.7 * var(--m, 1.5px)) 0 var(--blue),
var(--m, 1.5px) calc(.8 * var(--m, 1.5px)) 0 var(--pink); }
.btn.primary { background: var(--over); color: var(--paper);
transition: box-shadow .12s cubic-bezier(.3,1.6,.5,1), transform .12s cubic-bezier(.3,1.6,.5,1); }
.btn.primary:hover { --m: 3px; } /* out of register */
.btn.primary:active { --m: 0px; transform: translateY(1px); } /* printed */
/* Focus: a blue ring with a pink offset copy */
:focus-visible { outline: 1.5px solid var(--blue); outline-offset: 3px;
box-shadow: 0 0 0 4.5px var(--paper), 3px 3px 0 4.5px var(--pink); }
```
**Contrast, measured on paper:** black 16.2:1, muted text 6.4:1, blue 4.5:1 (links and labels from 14px up), paper on the overprint 12.8:1, green 6.3:1. Pink is 2.9:1, so pink is never text. Black on pink is 5.5:1, black on yellow 13.6:1 and black on flame 4.9:1, which is why status fills carry black text.
**Black paper (dark mode):** paper becomes #151414, text becomes the paper colour, and inks combine with `mix-blend-mode: screen` instead of multiply, since multiply disappears on black. Blue screened with pink gives a light lilac (#FF9EEB) that takes black text. Keep the grain, at half strength.
## Applied well vs. misapplied
| Idea | Applied well | Misapplied |
|---|---|---|
| Two inks | Blue and pink across the whole product, yellow only for status | Five inks on one screen, a rainbow of "riso colours" |
| Overprint | The primary button is the blue x pink overprint, made with multiply | A purple chosen from a picker, or a gradient between the inks |
| Screens | Tracks, placeholders and quiet surfaces are a 25% dot screen of one ink; disabled is a dashed outline | Opacity tints, or a halftone so coarse it fights the content |
| Registration | Apart at rest, further on hover, in register when pressed or selected | Every element jittering, or body text printed with an offset |
| Texture | A light grain on the paper, sharp text over it | Heavy grain, scratches and fake dust over everything |
| Flatness | Overlap and 1.5px rules give the structure | Drop shadows "for depth", or rules boxing every element |
| Type | One grotesk, a huge display, tight; quiet body | Three novelty faces, distressed fonts in paragraphs |
| Motion | A 120ms springy stamp on press | Long floaty fades and scroll-triggered reveals |
## Gotchas
- **Isolate your blends.** `mix-blend-mode` mixes with everything behind the element, including the page. Put `isolation: isolate` on the poster or card that owns the overprint.
- **Multiply vanishes on dark backgrounds.** Use `screen` on black paper, and check contrast again in that mode.
- **Forced colours drop box-shadows.** Registration is drawn with `box-shadow`, so in Windows high contrast mode add a real border to buttons (`@media (forced-colors: active)`).
- **Screens and moire.** Keep dot screens at about 6px. Smaller pitches shimmer on some displays, and screens should never sit behind text.
- **Grain is a static image.** Keep it on the background, not on animated or scrolling layers, and keep its opacity low enough that text contrast holds.
- **Reduced motion.** The stamp and the drift are decoration, so turn them off under `prefers-reduced-motion`.

## Try it
There is a live study of the In use page in the feed: [Spot ink events page](https://ayeeye.net/study/spot-ink). Remix it and swap the ink pair. Blue and pink is the default, and teal with fluorescent orange, or green with red, keep the same rules.
